Building a 10 piece capsule wardrobe

The principle: everything has to combine

A capsule wardrobe is not a minimal wardrobe. It is a wardrobe where each piece works with almost all the others.

The arithmetic is simple. Ten pieces that go together give far more wearable outfits than twenty pieces that only half combine. That is why a full closet can leave you feeling you have nothing to wear.

Three rules to follow before buying

A restricted colour base. Two or three neutrals that go together, plus one or two accent colours. That is what makes everything combine.

Each piece has to serve in at least two contexts. If a garment only suits one situation, it is not part of the capsule, however good it looks.

Choose around your real life. If you spend five days at the office, your capsule cannot be half made of weekend pieces. That is the most common mistake.

The ten pieces

1. Dark jeans, straight fit. The most versatile piece on the list. A dark, even wash moves from the office to a night out.

2. Straight pants in a dressier fabric. They cover everything the jeans do not.

3. A second pair of jeans, more casual. A lighter wash or a different fit, so you are not wearing the same pair five days a week.

4. A sweater or a cardigan in a neutral colour. The middle layer, the one that works hardest in Québec.

5. A plain blouse or shirt. Tucked or out, it is the piece that makes an outfit look sharp.

6. One or two good quality t-shirts. The base for everything else.

7. A simple dress. A complete outfit in one piece. With a cardigan and boots, it crosses three seasons.

8. A blazer or a jacket. The piece that lifts any outfit a notch.

9. An accent piece. A colour, a print, something that looks like you. An entirely neutral capsule ends up unworn.

10. A coat suited to the season. In Québec, that is rarely just one. One for transition, one for winter.

Adapting the list to the climate here

A capsule designed for a temperate climate does not hold up here. Two adjustments are needed.

Count the middle layer twice. Sweaters and cardigans are worn a good part of the year, not only in winter. That is the category where it is worth having more than one option.

Do not count coats among the ten. They work as a separate, seasonal system, and trying to fold them in distorts the whole list.

How to build yours without replacing everything

Do not start from a store. Start from your closet.

Pull out what you have worn in the last month. That is your real capsule, the one you already use without knowing it. Look at what comes back and what never leaves the hanger.

Then look for the gaps. There are usually one or two, not ten. Many people discover they have five tops that look alike and nothing that ties them together.

Buy those missing pieces one at a time, and check each time that they combine with at least three things you already own.

Frequently asked questions

How many pieces in a capsule wardrobe? Often ten to fifteen, excluding coats and extreme-season clothing.

Do you have to buy it all at once? No. Start from what you already wear and fill the gaps one by one.

Does a capsule have to be entirely neutral? No. One or two accent pieces make it wearable day to day.

How do you adapt it to the Québec climate? Double the middle layer and treat coats separately.
