The same logic as jeans, in other fabrics
If you have already worked out the jeans fit that suits you, you have done the hard part. Pant fits follow the same logic: the difference comes mostly from the fabric and the body it has.
Pants in a fluid fabric will fall differently from denim in the same fit. Softer, more mobile, often dressier. The fit gives the silhouette, the fabric gives the register.
Straight leg
The line drops straight from the hip to the hem. It is the most versatile fit, the one that works with the most tops and shoes.
If you have to choose a single pair of pants, this is usually the one. It moves from the office to an evening out without effort, and it takes a tucked top as easily as one worn long.
Slim leg
The leg narrows gradually towards the ankle. It shows off the line of the leg and is easy to wear with boots, since no volume gathers at the bottom.
It is also the most practical fit for a Québec winter: nothing blocks at the boot opening.
Wide leg
The volume starts at the hip or the thigh and stays roomy all the way down. The silhouette is fluid and the fit very comfortable.
Two points make all the difference. First the length: the hem should graze the shoe, never drag. Then the balance of the top: a tucked or more fitted top keeps the silhouette from getting lost in the volume.
Jogger
The bottom is gathered by an elastic band, and often the waist is too. It is the most comfortable fit, made for days when you move, for travel and for working from home.
It is more casual by nature. With a sharp top and a clean shoe, it stays entirely presentable.
Choosing around your use rather than the trend
This is the angle that gives the best results in the fitting room.
A seated office day. A straight or slim leg, in a fabric that does not wrinkle too much, with a waist that does not compress when seated.
A day on your feet and moving. A straight leg with a little ease, or a jogger if the context allows.
A dressy occasion. A wide or straight leg in a fluid fabric. The body of the fabric does a good part of the work.
Travel and commuting. A fabric that wrinkles little and a comfortable fit. The jogger and the soft straight leg are the best choices.
The rise matters as much as the fit
As with jeans, the height of the waist changes the feel more than the fit itself.
A high rise stays stable all day and marks the waist. A mid rise is the most common compromise. A low rise leans on the hips and gives a more casual look.
If you are torn between two fits, look at the rise first. It is often what explains why one pair appeals to you and another does not.
Length, again and always
A perfect fit is spoiled by a badly set hem. For a wide or straight leg, the hem should graze the top of the shoe you will wear most often. For a slim leg, one or two folds at the ankle are of no consequence.
Measure the inseam of a pair you already like and use it as a reference for all your orders.
