Jeans bleus pliés tenus dans les mains

How to wash jeans and preserve their colour and shape

Washing wears jeans out more than wearing them

That is the starting point, and it often surprises people. Jeans are not damaged mainly by being worn. They are damaged because they are washed too often, too hot, and dried at high temperature.

Heat is the main factor. It fades dark colours and tires the elastic fibres in stretch denim. This is why two people who buy the same pair can have very different jeans a year later.

The most useful rule: wash less often

Jeans worn for a normal day, at the office or around town, generally do not need washing. Airing them out for a few hours is enough in most cases.

Spacing out washes is the habit that best preserves colour and shape. That does not mean never washing: as soon as there is a stain, an odour or a messy use, wash them. But the reflex of putting jeans in the laundry after every wear uses them up for nothing.

The habits that make the difference

Turn the jeans inside out. This protects the surface of the fabric from rubbing against the rest of the load. It is the simplest move and one of the most effective for preserving colour.

Close the zipper and buttons. An open zipper catches other garments and warps.

Wash in cold water. Cold water is enough in the vast majority of cases and clearly limits fading.

Choose a gentle cycle. Less agitation, less wear on seams and topstitching.

Wash with similar colours. New dark jeans can release a little dye during the first washes.

Drying, the most underestimated step

This is where most of the damage happens. A high temperature dryer shrinks the fabric, tires the elastane and accelerates fading.

Hanging jeans to dry is the best option. If you use the dryer, choose the lowest temperature and take them out while still slightly damp, then let them finish drying in the air. They will hold their shape and length better.

The instructions on the label and on the product page always take precedence over general advice. Compositions vary, and a very stretchy denim needs more care than a mostly cotton one.

What not to do

Do not bleach coloured jeans. Bleach attacks the dye irreversibly.

Do not use excess fabric softener. It can leave a residue that makes denim less breathable.

Do not leave wet jeans in a ball. Creases set in and can become hard to remove.

Do not iron stretch denim at high temperature. Direct heat damages the elastic fibres.

What if the jeans loosen as you wear them?

That is normal, especially with stretch denim. The fabric relaxes over the day then recovers its shape in the wash. If the jeans loosen a lot within the first few hours, that is more a sign that they are too big or that the fit is not right.

Frequently asked questions

How often should jeans be washed? Less often than you think. Airing them out is enough after a normal day.

Cold or warm water? Cold water in the vast majority of cases, especially for dark denim.

Can jeans go in the dryer? Yes, at low temperature, taking them out slightly damp. Hanging is still preferable.

Should new jeans be washed before wearing? It is not required. If you do, wash them alone or with similar colours.
